QiQi+MinMin’s Travel Blog 9: Wrentham Village Premium Outlets in Wrentham, Massachusetts, USA (2008.11.22, 2010.11.25)

Premium Outlets in USA are so famous. Before studying in Boston, I went to Las Vegas for a business trip. At that time, I experienced the charming outlets by myself. My mom, my friends and MinMin asked me to buy a lot of things for them via an international phone call. At last, I had to buy another luggage to stuff all of things in it, and I was forced to leave the mall by two security guards because I was still shopping when stores were closed. What a unforgettable experience!

When we just got at Boston, we planned to go to Wrentham Village Premium Outlets but it’s so far from home, 40-min drive away, no bus or any transit to there. At that time, Wrentham was unreachable because we did not have a car. Luckily, we met a new friend, a second-year graduate student who had a car and also planned to go there. So, finally we got to Wrentham Village Premium Outlets to buy some coats and snow boots for our first winter in Boston.

Wrentham Premium Outlets are very welcomed because of good location. People from outside Massachusetts, such as Rhode Island, New Hampshire, even Canada always go there. In addition, in Massachusetts, clothing under $175 is not be taxed. The sales tax of accessories like bags is only 6.25%. That’s why we often saw cars from New York even from Canada in the parking lot. 6.25% is more than half of Ontario sales tax (13%) . As I know, since 2012, another premium outlets open in New Hampshire whose sales tax is 0%, a real competitor to Wrentham Premium Outlets. You just need drive 30 minutes more to New Hampshire that you don’t need pay tax for everything. Next time when we go to Boston, we must check these two outlets by ourselves.

Wrentham Village Premium Outlets is one of premium outlets owned and managed by Simon Property Group. Although brands in Woodbury Outletsbrands are much more luxurious than in Wrentham Outlets , and price in Wrentham is not more competitive than outlets in California, residents in New England are so lucky that they can drive less than one hour to reach such a great premium outlets.

Every year there are Midnight Madness Sales on Thanksgiving Day in a lot of shopping malls, such as Bestbuy and Walmart. Wrentham Village Premium Outlets also joins Midnight Madness Sales every year. We also attended its Midnight Madness in 2010. We saw a lot of local people were very experienced and well prepared. They had tents, chairs, sleeping bags, heaters and even BBQ grills. Each family member lined up for different stores, it’s a good teamwork. We did not have our shopping plan but just experienced the mad atmosphere by ourselves.

At that night of 2010 Thanksgiving Day, we had our dinner earlier and left home with our midnight snacks at 6pm. We made a shortcut through Wrentham neighborhood to avoid the long waiting line on the I95. And we were the first group to enter the parking lot. Security guards were well trained to guide every car to an assigned parking lot. Police officers were controlling traffic on I95. Everyone was in order to wait to enter.

After we parked our car, we were watching TV, drinking coffee and having our snacks in our car. We made a quick tour to stretch our legs at 9pm. The temperature outside was below 0 ºC (32ºF ). Don’t worry. We were also well prepared with hats, gloves and down coats. We found we completely missed a good chance to line up although we arrived at the Outlets much earlier than others. When we were keeping warm inside the car, others had already lined up in front of every store. There was a long line in front of SONY store that would not open until 6am in the morning. We admired those people who were going to line up for the whole night. They were even bringing their own comforts.

There was a long line in front of every store.  It’s just 9pm.

Look at this line, guess what the line was for? People who often go to the Outlets must know the answer. Yes, it’s Coach, people always line up for Coach even at the normal day. Today must have the longest line in the whole outlets. The first person started to line up at 6pm. Unexpectedly!!!

We don’t like lining up. So we just walked around, took a picture like a tourist and recorded US people’s real life for Midnight Madness on Thanksgiving day. At 12am, most stores except SONY and Burberry were open. People were in order to enter the stores. Nobody was running or pushing. The long lines of most stores disappeared very quickly. We followed the line into the stores to check how big discounts we got at Midnight Madness. Actually we felt it’s not a good day for bargain hunters. Midnight Madness was not a right time to get the best deal of the year.  Midnight Madness was just a stimulus or an excuse for people to spend money.  Although we did not get the best deal of the year, we were one of satisfied shoppers with several shopping bags because tonight was for Madness.  Midnight Madness on Thanksgiving is not only a shopping season but also a North American Culture that we experienced and learned.

Here is the detail map showing the 40-min drive from our town to Wrentham Village Premium Outlets .
