QiQi+MinMin’s Travel Blog 96: Oslo, Os & Bergen, Norway(Day 7-8-Oslo)

Day 7     9/3/2014          Wednesday

We had one-day Oslo Passes, which costed us NOK 395 per person. Our half-day visit to Bygdoy Peninsula already helped us get our cost back. The afternoon visit to museums and metro rides was our extra bonus.

Although we can walk to our first stop Historical Museum near the Royal Palace, we typically took a tram at Aker brygge Tram Station in front of Nobel Peace Center.

We took the tram back to Oslo S Central Station and transferred a subway to National Theater Station.

Here is a map for Oslo Metro System. Most tourist attractions can be reached by subways.

Finally found a mailbox to mail our postcards to our home

Historical Museum, in front of the Royal Palace, its address is Frederiks gate 2, 0164 Oslo, free entrance for Oslo Pass holders, if you don’t have, it costs you NOK 100. And the museum is located in a very elegant building. Actually, walking from a docker to the museum only takes 10 minutes, we just wanted to try a tram and made a big detour to the museum.

The first floor is all about the Middle Ages, gold, gold, gold

A Partial of Interior Decoration of a Stave Church

One recommendation to Historical Museum is to add an English-version introduction to each exhibition

Every national museum of history gives a part to native people of a country.

A good historical museum has Ancient Egyptian exhibitions.

A special exhibition is about the history of Norwegian monetary system.

National Gallery is right behind Historical Museum, some people don’t like going to an art gallery, especially when the itinerary is tight.  But this one, you cannot miss. The most valuable Norwegian treasures are in there. Its address is Universitetsgata 13, 0164 Oslo, and it is also included in Oslo Pass, if you don’t have a pass, you have to pay NOK 120 for a ticket.

The Bronze Statue of “Tarn-Petter” placed in front of National Gallery, who was a plumber and climbed the church tower to make himself famous as “Tower Petter”, this statue was made by Rolf Lunde in 1927, who was a Norwegian painter and sculptor.  Whoever put that red rose in his hand definitely made a finishing touch.

National Gallery was founded in 1837,  this gallery has Norway’s largest public collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures. So it’s worth to spend time to visit thoroughly.

How many “The Thinker” did Auguste Rodin make? Almost every famous museum has one.

This was our main purpose to visit National Gallery, an exhibition hall for ‎Edvard Munch. Although we had already been to Munch Museum, National Gallery has his most significant pieces and you are allowed to take pictures for them. Edvard Munch loved to paint himself. This is one of his self-portraits, Self-Portrait with the Spanish Flu in 1919.

That painting I took a picture with is “The Scream”, which is the most famous painting made by Edvard Munch. Edvard Munch created 3 paintings of “The Scream”. One is in Munch Museum, which we saw on Day 3 in Oslo. As it was once stolen and recovered, that “The Scream” is kept under strict surveillance. Visitors are not allowed to take photos for it. And another one was sold for $119,922,600 at Sotheby’s Auction in 2012 from MoMA New York, one of the most expensive paintings in the world. And the third one is exhibited here, this is the only one in the world you can see closely and take photos with.

National Gallery has another version of “Madonna” , which is the second famous painting made by Edvard Munch. You can find another two versions in Munch Museum.

“Dance of Life”, created by Edvard Munch from 1899 to 1900  爱德华·蒙克创作于1899年到1900年间的《生命之舞》

Edvard Munch’s paintings, on the left, “Puberty”, created from 1894 to 1895, and “The Sick Child”, created from 1885 to 1886 on the right

“Death in the Sickroom”, another one created by Edvard Munch in 1893  《病房中死亡》, 另一幅爱德华·蒙克的画作, 创作于1893年

Paul Gauguin’s

Two Paul Cézanne’s Pieces

Two Masterpieces of Claude Monet

All about Pablo Picasso

Back to National Theater Station for our Lunch

After a quick lunch, we were going to Vigeland Sculpture Park. Take Subway No. 2, 4, or 5 to Station Majorstue, and walk to the south for one block to the crossroads of Valkyriegata with Kirkeveien, it’s easy to recognize the crossroads, which are full of stores. There is a bus stop in front of those stores, get on any bus towards the west along Kirkeveien.

We did not count how many stops we took, just get off when you see this big gate of Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Vigeland Sculpture Park is the world’s largest sculpture park. There is a long long way to go to the center of the park. However, we walked too much today, totally exhausted, this trail was really challenging.

They put more than 200 sculptures by a Norwegian Sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943) in bronze, granite and cast iron along the trail. Vigeland Sculpture Park is the only one sculpture park in the world to exhibit a single sculptor’s works.

All Vigeland’s works are figures of human beings – man, woman and child.

“The Angry Boy”, the most famous one among the over 200 sculptures “生气男孩”, 是两百多个雕塑里最有名的一个

We finally got at the fountain square located in the center of the park, totally 1 km from the gate.

“The Monolith”, the biggest sculpture in the park, dozens of figures of human beings around the monolith, an icon for the center of the park  “石柱”, 公园最大的雕塑, 一堆人物雕塑围绕着石柱, 公园中心的标志

A Rose Garden in front of the Fountain

As a free public urban park, Vigeland Sculpture Park is good for nearby residents to walk dogs, lay out in the sun and relax. For tourists, although Vigeland Sculpture Park is listed in the top must-go tourist attractions, walking in the park to see those similar statues feels a little boring.

As we got a bright sunny day, we wanna go back to the highest point of the city to oversee Oslo, which we missed on Day 3 due to heavy storm.  So, we took line 1 to Holmenkollen Station for Holmenkollen Ski Museum & Tower.

After a full day walk around the city since 6am, we still climbed with sour legs and painful feet for 20 minutes to the top of the hill for a ski jump tower at Holmenkollen Ski Museum. People who have been to Holmenkollen Ski Museum can understand how brave we were at that day.

This museum opens from 9am to 8pm during the summer from June to August, from 10am to 5pm in September and 10am to 4pm from October to December. Yes, three different schedules, very confused. Our first time to go there was on August 30 to follow summer schedule. We did not realize the opening time was changed in September when we came back today. Unfortunately, when we got there, the museum was already closed. We missed again to oversee the city of Oslo from the top of the ski jump tower.

The view from the entrance of the museum is good enough to comfort us.

Holmenkollen has Zipline. Zipping down to the bottom of the hill from the top of the ski jump tower is very exciting. Zipline must has its own entrance to the tower, which can be run after the closing time of the museum.

Olympic Rings

Due to an ongoing music festival, Comfort Hotel Boersparken we stayed before was sold out. We stayed in Anker Hostel for our last night in Norway. Surprisingly, We got a 6-person room as our private room with private bathroom and kitchen, pretty good and comfortable. As this hostel is not near any metro station, you have to a Bus No. 11, 12, 17 or 30 for 2 stops from Oslo S Central Station.

We were too tired to have mood to have a sit-down dinner. And we wanna have more crabs before leaving, so we cleared all the crabs from REMA 1000. This crab is what we miss most in Norway.

We had a good sleep and went to Oslo S Central Station to take a train to the airport on the next morning.

Picked up our train tickets from NSB booth, which we booked in advance.

The express shuttle train “FLYTOGET” we took from airport to central station costed us NOK 190 per person, the ticket price of NSB train to airport was only NOK 90 per person. As there is no NSB booth at the airport, you have no choice to take the expensive one, but when you get back to the airport, you can buy train tickets from NSB in central station.

That red train was a NSB train to the airport. Compared to that express shuttle train, NSB has less trains with more stops. It’s certainly worth to leave earlier for NOK 100 per person less.

As Oslo Airport Station may be not a last stop for your train, you must double check the final stop name of the forthcoming train on the screen with your tickets. Actually, there is no clear information about the final stop of your train on your tickets, make sure to ask NSB staff to write down the name of your final stop for you.

This morning train is a commuter train for locals.

NSB even puts coffee and snack vending machines in the train for commuters.

We sat near the real-time train tracking screen to make sure we did not miss the stop.

We got at the airport 15 minutes later.  NSB trains run at similar speed as the express shuttle trains “FLYTOGET”.

Suggest get at the Oslo airport a little earlier for its big duty-free store, full of cosmetics, wines and specialty foods.

We bought two bottles of Norwegian spirits, which made us a lot of troubles in Newark airport.

And we bought a lot of chocolates, especially this local brand.

We were on the way home, we miss you already, Norway.

Norwegian Fjords and snow mountains, goodbye now, and we will see you again, next time we will come back to Norway to do natural sightseeing.

Two Meals in United Airlines, not bad, the flight from Norway to USA was very smooth and on time. We did not realize our nightmare was waiting for us at Newark .

We are risk averse persons who always get at airports at least 2 hours earlier and budget over 3 hours between connections. However, this time we had nearly 5 hours to connect, we almost screwed it up, because we made a very wrong choice to enter US border and transfer a flight back to Toronto through Newark airport, which has been listed as the worst airport in USA for years. And it’s our first time been to Newark airport, it should be our last time to that miserable airport.  Let me tell you our nightmare in Newark airport.

Several international flights landed at the same time, hundreds of passengers lined up for customs clearance, but only two officers were there, the line moved very very slowly, no crowd control, no backup officers, even no air conditioning.   We stood for over 3 hours in customs hall. Our tragedy was endless as long as we were still at Newark airport.

Although our second flight was an international flight operated by United Airlines too, we had to go to another terminal. This surprised us, we had to run for it. But there was no clear sign and map to guide us how to get there. And Newark airport is like a maze. Even we asked three airport staff for help, all of them pointed a direction and left, no talk, poker face, impatient and rude. The entrance to another terminal was a tiny door at a small corner, we almost missed that.

When we thought we should have been at another terminal after entering that tiny door, we found we were standing outside the security check at the entrance of the airport, we need re-do security check to enter another terminal, there was a very long line in front of us for that security check. But our flight started boarding. We explained our situation to airport staff to beg them to give us the priority, he rejected us without hesitation, even did not raise his head to look at me . I was frustrated and my eyes got wet with tears, not for missing our flight but for those cruel persons.

At that time, a young man stood out and spoke for us, and several nice people at the head of the line let us cut in, who made me re-believe the world still has nice people. But problems always come together. I mentioned before, we bought 2 bottles of wines from the duty-free shop at Oslo Airport, they were put in a duty-free bag and sealed, we never opened and carried it with us.  But the security check officer insisted opening the sealed duty-free bag and took the wines out to inspect during our last 15 minutes boarding time, even another officer told her she did not need do that inspection for duty-free stuff.

When every check was done, we run toward our gate with a glimmer of hope. When we got there, the gate staff was prepared to close the gate. Luckily, they let us go through and we successfully got on our flight in the last second. Today was not our day, but not a bad day, just a hard day.

Give other passengers an advice, try your best to avoid Newark airport, if you cannot avoid it, budget at least 5 hours to connect your flight. That airport is a mess.  Everything at Newark airport is a mess.

Happy to see you again Toronto, we just spent 5 minutes to pass Canadian customs, all counters were open. Those should be open at all times.

All Souvenirs, Starbucks mugs, stamps, magnets, chocolates and the 2 bottle of wines

We got the postcards that we mailed from Oslo and Bergen to ourselves several days later.  Surprised to see that Oslo postcard has a special stamp of Holmenkollen Ski Museum on it, because we mailed it from there.

Here is the map showing our visit to Oslo on Day 7.

Day 7     9/3/2014          Wednesday

Our train suddenly stopped in somewhere at 2:19am, a truck rolled over and blocked the train trail in front of us, we were asked to get off the train and take a bus to detour for several stops.

It’s really challenging to drive a bus on the winding mountain roads in the dark. And our ride took almost 2 hours, our bus almost ran out of gas, I heard beep beep for a while.  When we were wondering whether we could drive between Oslo and Bergen instead of taking a train, most comments talked about bringing several gas tanks on the road trip due to lack of gas stations in mountains. Now I totally understand what those comments were serious. And renting a car in Norway, especially an automatic car, really burns your pocket.  That’s why we dropped the plan for a road trip.

After the over 2-hr bus ride, we finally got on another train. But our sweet night was totally screwed, we only had another hour for sleep before sunrise.  As this accident bothered passengers’ sleep, tickets for bed types can get a full refund, not ours, our tickets were the cheapest tickets for reclining seats.

Our Breakfast, ready-to-eat crabs, which we bought from REMA 1000, a local supermarket, the same crab as we saw in Fish Market at the harbor of Bergen,  which you must try

We would have a long day today, starting from sunrise, now we were waiting for the first ferry to Bygdoy Peninsula at the harbor in front of Oslo City Hall.

The Boat Docker for Ferry to Bygdoy Peninsula

Our Ferry, which is included in Oslo Pass, otherwise, you pay NOK 69 for a return ticket

We were on board.

Take a ferry not a bus to Bygdoy Peninsula for this such a breathtaking scenic view

Bygdoy Peninsula, where the rich people live, you can walk in this peaceful community to see these multi-million dollar mansions.

Bygdoy Peninsula is best known for museums about Norwegian history and culture.  Walk straight ahead from the docker for 15 minutes, and you will arrive the Viking Ship Museum, which is part of Museum of Cultural History under University of Oslo.

The Viking Ship Museum has the world’s best preserved viking ships, which were found around Oslo Fjord. Its address is Huk Aveny 35, 0287 Oslo, and its admission fee is NOK 100, this museum is included in Oslo Pass, so for Oslo Pass Holders, it’s free.

Tune Ship, wrecks of a long ship

All About The Viking Age

Gokstad Ship, a 9th-century viking ship

On the way to another museum, which is next to Viking Ship Museum, only 5 minutes walk

Its address is Museumsveien 10, 0287 Oslo, and the admission fee is NOK 130, for Oslo Pass Holders, it’s free.

There are 155 houses in Norwegian style from different eras of Norway, most houses are completely different from current houses, worth to spend some time to walk around.

We saw similar houses with grass on the roof near Frognerseteren Restaurant several days ago, now we know what the origin is.

Although the museum puts these houses randomly just to fit the land size, you can see houses change over time by yourself.

A Viking Tent at Old Times

This should be the oldest house among the 155 houses.

A Village, which allows visitors to enter to see inside

Rooms in a house are super small with low ceiling, we actually crawled into the room.

A Stave Church from the Year 1200,  a medieval wooden Christian church building common in north-western Europe, most of the surviving stave churches are in Norway

The only one house is fully furnished.

Cross stitch has a long history in Norway, which I make to kill time at home. We saw a store to sell cross stitch in Bergen

There is an indoor museum near the entrance, it’s worth to spend time to see the history of Norway, especially it’s a good place to cool yourself down after walking outside for 2 hours in the sun.

Traditional Costumes

The Structure of that Stave Church

Antique Weapon

Take a Bus No. 30 right in front of Norsk Folkemuseum to the last bus stop Kon-Tiki Museum, our 3rd stop on Bygdoy Peninsula. Its admission fee is NOK 120 and  included in Oslo Pass, so it’s free as well for Oslo Pass Holders. Its address is Bygdøynesveien 36, 0286 Oslo Bygdøynesveien 36, 0286 Oslo

Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002), a Norwegian adventurer, who made a well-known Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947 to sail 8,000 km across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to Tuamotu Island, this museum is his archive to record this expedition.

This is the Thor Heyerdahl’s hand-built raft. The reason why the great man took such a huge risk to take this raft was just to demonstrate that ancient people can make long sea voyages to create contacts between each other to share separate cultures.

Thor Heyerdahl made another expedition to Easter Island in 1955. People always believed the stone statues only had heads before Thor Heyerdahl’s expedition team dig the whole body out. The bottom of the statue in light color was buried under the ground.

Kon-Tiki (1950 film) is a Norwegian-Swedish documentary film about the Kon-Tiki expedition and won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 1951 at the 24th Academy Award.

The triangle building right next to Kon-Tiki Museum is another museum-the Fram Museum, there is a 19-century polar ship inside. A big tourist group just got into that museum, so we decided to visit another museum behind the Fram Museum first.

Norwegian Maritime Museum, a 2-floor ship museum at the back of the Fram Museum, the museum is free

A Very Very Special Gift Shop Full of Ship Models

Roald Amundsen Monument, who used that polar ship in the Fram Museum to become the first person to reach the South Pole

There is a public garden behind the museums, you can enjoy the fantastic view from the garden.

We finally got into the Fram Museum, this museum costs NOK 120 if you don’t have Oslo Pass. This is that Polar Ship Fram, the strongest wooden ship ever built, Fram still holds the records for sailing farthest north and farthest south. Norwegian Polar Exploration used this ship to the Arctic and Antarctic region.

Norwegian Polar Exploration Team

You can get on board to see the ship inch by inch and experience how Norwegian Polar Exploration Team lived on the ship for months in the coldest and most dangerous places at the Arctic and the Antarctic.

There is another ferry docker at the Fram Museum, we did not need come back to that docker we got off this morning near the Viking Ship Museum. We were enjoying the beautiful view and waiting for our ferry back to downtown Oslo. A small group was rowing a wooden boat back to the mainland by themselves.

Our ferry No. 91 was here.

Beautiful Day Beautiful View, again, take a ferry not a bus because of this beautiful Oslo Fjord

Although Oslo does not have a New York style skyline, there are beautiful buildings to see. This is the most high-end community “Aker Brygge” where we went on Day 1 in Oslo.  Staying at a NOK 35M penthouse can enjoy such a beautiful Fjord view every day.

Akershus Fortress, which we went to on Day 3   阿克什胡斯城堡, 我们第三天有去参观过那里

Oslo City Hall, which we went to on Day 1, our ferry terminal was in front of that city hall.

We really went to a lot of places in one day, in order to control the length of a blog post, let me stop here. To follow our steps, please see the next one blog post.

Here is the map showing our visit to Bygdoy Peninsula.

Day 6     9/2/2014           Tuesday

Finished our task and continued our journey to Bergen, the second largest city in Norway located in west coast. Bergen was served as the capital of Norway in the 13th century and it was the largest city in Norway until 1830s.  And Bergen is called as the rainiest city on Earth, not London or “Raincouver” Vancouver, Bergen rains 240 days per year. As a tourist, rainy day should be a part of your journey in Bergen.

Took a taxi back to Bergen Station. Luggage storage lockers in different size can be found near the entrance. It’s a great service for tourists like us,  as we had a full day to visit the city and then we would take the night train back to Oslo.

Although Bergen also provides an one-day pass for visitors including museums, galleries and transportation, we did not buy it as our schedule was very tight. We spent only several hours to walk around to visit the downtown Bergen.  This is  Bergen Public Library.

Lille Lungegårdsvannet, this is a natural lake, not a man-made pond, that high rise building on the right is the city hall of Bergen.

Bergen is known as the city of 7 mountains, because the city is surrounded by mountains. And people live in the mountains.

Statue of Christian Michelsen in Festplassen (1857-1925), a Norwegian shipping magnate and statesman who was born in Bergen. He was the first Prime Minister of independent Norway from 1905 to 1907.

Surprised to see so many impatient people who crossed on a red light

Byparken, a city park

KODE 1, one of Bergen Art Museums, if you have Bergen Pass, it’s free, otherwise, NOK 120 per person, actually we did not have a plan to visit it, just asked for borrowing a restroom, but the restrooms in there are only for museum visitors.

Its gift shop can be visited without admission tickets right in front of the ticket booth.  Those souvenirs in the gift shop are all about home decor because KODE 1 is a museum of decoration art.

The Statue of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), Norway’s Greatest Composer and Pianist, who was born in Bergen. And two shopping malls “Telegrafen” and “Xhibition Shopping Center” are behind the statue.

There is a post office in Xhibition Shopping Center, where we bought a lot of souvenir stamp collections. BTW, there are restrooms in the shopping center but they put password locks on the restroom doors. When you buy something from a store, you can ask a cashier to give you that password for using the restrooms in the mall. But at first, you have to buy something from one of stores. It’s ridiculous, restrooms should be a public service not only for residents but also for tourists. I am the person who always feel anxious about needing a restroom. I totally felt pressure all the time just because of looking for restrooms since I walked out of our hotel.

Torgallmenningen, a main square in Bergen, which is a car-free shopping zone for 4 blocks.  Torgallmenningen,

National Theater, built in 1850, one of the oldest theaters in Norway and the largest one in Bergen

The Statue of Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906),  a 19th-century Norwegian playwright, theater director, poet,  “the father of realism” and one of the founders of Modernism in theater. His career in theater started from this theater in 1851 and spent the following 7 years here to gain practical experience at Norwegian theater.

Statue of Ole Bull in the lobby of National Theater, Ole Bull (1810-1880), a famous Norwegian violinist and composer, who was born in Bergen

Like this painting so much  好喜欢这幅画

Magnus Barefoot Cinema, named after the Norwegian King Magnus Barefoot (1093-1103). It is the main venue of Bergen International Film Festival.

That red tower at the top of the hill was our destination.

St. John’s Church, the largest church in Bergen, built in 1894 in the Gothic Revival style, unfortunately the church was under the construction when we were there, we cannot get in to visit.

University of Bergen, this place was not in our list, it was right behind the church, we just went to the school campus to look for a restroom, but we failed again, the restrooms were locked to request passwords, so so so weird.

University of Bergen, a public university with about 17,000 students, one of 8 universities in Norway, founded in 1946  卑尔根大学, 有着1万7千位学生的公立大学, 挪威8个大学之一, 创办于1946年

Bergen Maritime Museum, which is included in Bergen Pass

University Museum of Bergen – The Cultural History Collections is next to Bergen Maritime Museum, also included in Bergen Pass, our schedule was too tight to spend time in museums.

University Museum of Bergen-The Natural History Collections, when we were there, it’s closed for renovation.

We got lost while looking for “Bryggen”, that famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. But we really enjoyed walking in the residential area like locals.

Østre Murallmenningen, a zig zag road for pedestrians in old Jewish community, it’s a bonus for us who really got lost and was trying to find a way down to the harbor.

Tourist Information in Bergen, like every visitor center, you can ask for a Visitor’s Guide, but except for a free restroom, the European style, which I am not getting used to.

Here is also a boarding deck for fjord cruises.

And you can get the best view for “Bryggen” at the back of Tourist Information, the most famous tourist attraction in Bergen.

There is a funicular to bring you to the top of Mount Fløyen to get the full view over the city of Bergen, but it’s rainy day, there’s a misty fog over the mountain, we thought we cannot get a beautiful view as we expected, so we dropped our plan to take a ride to the top of the mountain.

Fish Market in the heart of the city of Bergen at the harbor, definitely do not miss this place for seafood, flowers and markets

Since 1200s, this fish market has been a trading place for merchants and fishermen, now more for a famous tourist attraction for souvenirs and restaurants.

Whale Meat, for us, we reject to eat whales, even they offer free tasting, whales need us to protect

A Good Place for Tasting Seafood, but Pricey

That crab you must try, but not there, buy them from local supermarket “REMA 1000”, we found ready-to-eat crabs accidentally and came back to buy several times to eat as many as we can before we left.

What a ugly fish!

Again, Whale Meat, no necessary to eat them, meat lovers, there are a lot of other meats you can have, no whale meats, please.

Norway Lobster, most live in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, the most important commercial crustacean in Europe

We tried to find something to eat, but meals in fish market were too pricey for us.

Bryggen, special old buildings from Hanseatic period of Bergen, which is located in the east side of the harbor. Hanseatic League was established in Bergen around 1350, which made Bryggen be the centre of the Hanseatic commercial activities in Norway.  A part of the buildings were destroyed by fires, the buildings in front of us had been renovated several times. Today, Bryggen houses museums, shops, restaurants and pubs. And Bryggen has been on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites since 1979.

This is the major part of Bryggen, which is shown in every picture about Bryggen.

Walking along the harbor

Bergenhus Fortress is over there, one of the oldest and best preserved castles in Norway

In medieval times, Bergenhus Fortress was the royal residence in Bergen. The buildings in the fortress date back to 12th century. For example, this Rosenkrantz Tower was built around 1270. During World War II, the German navy used here for their headquarters.  Bergenhus is currently under the command of the Royal Norwegian Navy, which has about 150 military personnel there.

Haakon’s Hall, a medieval stone hall, constructed in the middle of the 13th century, during the reign of King Haakon IV. In medieval times, it was the largest building of the royal palace in Bergen. It is the largest medieval building in Norway.  Visitors can enter the Haakon’s Hall to see inside, but it was closed when we were there, please check the opening time before going there.

The Statue of Haakon VII of Norway (1872-1957), who united the Norwegian nation to resist to the German invasion

The Sign for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, here is the site of Bryggen. These buildings are now for museums, shops, restaurants and pubs.

Most shops are gift shops, a best place to find souvenirs for your friends and family

This building is special, Julenhuset is an all-year-round Christmas shop. Everyday is Christmas in this store.

Moomins, the family of white hippos created by a Swedish-Finnish writer, who wrote a lot of Nordic bedtime stories

What a nice restaurant owner who put warm sheepskin rugs on chairs!  Sitting outside at the harbor of Bergen in September in a cloudy day is a little chilly.

Cross-Stitch Lovers, I am one of you, look what I found

Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene,  all about Hanseatic League and the Bryggen, it’s also closed when we were there.

Starbucks in Bryggen, only one store provides free WIFI and public restrooms, and they speak English very well, compared to Oslo, fewer people in Bergen we met understand English. An old lady walking on the street in downtown Oslo can chat with us in English for a while.

Day 4     8/31/2014           Sunday

The Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen is one of the most scenic train rides in the world and is highly recommended by Lonely Planet. And compared to the flight between Oslo and Bergen, the train ride is a cost-saving choice.

You can buy train tickets online at NSB official website. But this website only accepts EU credit cards. So for non-EU tourists , you have to call their customer service to buy tickets through the phone. And NSB offers limited quantities for discounted price, nearly 50% off, check online frequently and get it immediately when you see the sale. FYI, the representative helped us book a ticket on the standard seat at discounted price, around CAD 160 per person for a round trip. Sorry, I totally forgot the exact final price in NOK. When we got at the Oslo S station, we just picked up the tickets through NSB booth.

As this is a 7-hour scenic train, you definitely book a daytime train to see the scene outside the window. So, here we go, waiting for our train which would depart at 8:05 a.m. to Bergen at Oslo S Station.

Another 7-hour train to Stockholm, Sweden at the same platform, wanna go there too同一个站台有列同样7小时火车去瑞典的斯特格尔摩, 想去想去

Our train came, much more beautiful than that train to Stockholm

Standard Seat, enough legrooms, soft chairs, which can be reclined for napping, we felt very comfortable for sitting to enjoy the view out of the window for 7 hours.

On the Way to Bergen

Our train started climbing the mountain.

The dining car was full of people during the lunch time.

Your tickets will be checked after a train departs, not when you get on the train. And the conductor will see your ID or Passport to match the names on the tickets.

The Menu for the Dining Car, a little expensive but acceptable

Our Lunch, a small pizza at NOK 20, and NOK 53 for a pancake with a coffee

Finse is the highest point of the Norwegian Railway System, 1222 meters above sea level.

The Machine to Dig a Tunnel across the Mountain

Bike Rentals for Tourists, a lot of backpackers got off the train at Finse, which should be a popular vacation spot

The view out of the window was getting more and more beautiful.

Snow Mountain 雪山

Classic Norwegian Fjords

Bergen was right in front of us. Time went so fast as we were fully attracted by the view.

The two videos include the most beautiful views I selected from the 7-hour train ride.

Bergen Station

Took a taxi to the conference hotel “Solstrand Hotel & Bad” located in Os, 30 km from Bergen.

We had a quick look at the city of Bergen through the window of the taxi.

Gas Price in Bergen was NOK 14.3 per liter, almost double prices in Canada, now I know why driving electric cars is so common in Norway

And taxi is very expensive in Norway, NOK 856 for 30 km

Solstrand Hotel & Bad, 40 minute drive from Bergen, where MinMin’s conference was held    MinMin开会的酒店Solstrand Hotel & Bad到了, 离卑尔根40分钟车程

Solstrand Hotel & Bad is a historic hotel in Bergen, which was built in 1896 as a holiday resort for Bergen merchant princes.

Lobby

Our Room, they put two twin beds together to make a Queen bed, it’s weird. Maybe that’s why hotels in Norway charge an additional fee for the second person to share the room.

You never feel bored when you have such a beautiful view.

By far this is the best hotel we stayed. So we took a walk to visit thoroughly.

As a holiday resort, this hotel gets a good location in the heart of the fjord. You don’t need take a cruise to see the fjord, which is right outside your window.

Another Side of the Hotel

This hotel itself is a museum exhibiting the over 100-year history.

Conference Room for Tomorrow’s Meeting

Dining Hall for Tomorrow’s Breakfast

After a wonderful breakfast, we took a walk to visit the downtown Os, where over 20K people live.

There is no bus service to the downtown Os, we had to walk along this trail to the residential area.

The view was fantastic although we got a cloudy day.

Wild Baby Pomegranate

A tree from South America can live in Norway because here is Bergen, which has the Gulf stream to keep warm and the mountains to block the cold winds.   And Bergen usually has warm winters at above 0 °C.

Wild Apple Trees

After 10 min walk, we finally were in the neighborhood. The houses in modern style are my favorite.

We were at the halfway.  And European countries except UK use a comma as a decimal.

A home decor store sells products related to USA, everyone has an American dream.

What a fantastic view over Oselva River !

This downtown Os is a full-service shopping area.  Os

The housing price in Os is also high due to good location and fantastic view.  Os

Living Cost in suburbs is still high. I know, Norway is always listed as the most happy country in the world. But I guess the happiness is not from such a high living cost but from fresh air, clean water and beautiful landscape.

Residents in Os even can raise chicken in their backyards, actually those are free range chicken.

On our way back to hotel

Maybe we never get a chance to come back.  We are so thankful for the conference host to invite us to such a beautiful place. Before leaving, let us enjoy the view again and again.

Day 3     8/30/2014           Saturday

We are stamp collectors. As our plan, we would go to the headquarter of Norwegian Postal Service to check if we can buy some stamps as souvenirs, which locates several blocks away from our hotel. Unfortunately, it was closed on weekends.

Today, we had a long list to fulfill, starting from a walking tour in the downtown Oslo.

Our 1st stop should be Oslo Cathedral, it is surrounded by several restaurants in this Romanesque Revival style brick building, its name is “Oslo Bazaars” and locates at Kirkeristen.  It was constructed in 1841 originally for selling meat at the nearby market place Stortorvet. Now here is a protected site by Oslo Government.

Actually, we were standing in the center of a shopping area.

Oslo Cathedral, the main church for downtown Oslo, and Norwegian Royal Family also use this Cathedral. So, the Royal Weddings are held in this Cathedral. Its address is Karl Johans gate 11.  It was built in 1694.

Let us see how a Royal Church looks like.

We thought this building was a part of Oslo Cathedral. Actually, it was a fire department for old Oslo built between 1854 and 1856, now it’s a historic landmark.

We were inside the “Oslo Bazaars”, that restaurant area.

Stortorvet Oslo, locates right across the street to Oslo Cathedral, which was held to be a town market since 1889. This market still exists, but sells more flowers, vegetables and fruits.  Now here is a Norwegian Cultural Heritage Site.

Christian VI (1699 – 1746) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1730-46, this square was built in 1736 during the reign of Christian VI.

We were still in the shopping area.  GlasMagasinet, is a high-end department store in Oslo, and it is the city’s oldest department store founded in 1739.

Surprised to see Muji in Oslo,  which is a well-known Japanese retail company selling household and consumer goods.

A Shoe Store Chain, has over 60 stores in Northern Europe.

A Car-Free Zone through the whole shopping area to the Royal Palace, there are several car free zones in the city of Oslo, which gives pedestrians much more quiet and clean space to walk around freely.

Grand Hotel Oslo, opened in 1874, one of the most traditional hotels in Norway, this hotel hosts the annual Nobel Peace Prize banquet, and the prize winners stay in the Nobel suite at the hotel.

Café Christiania in a special building,

“The Storting”, Parliament of Norway, the supreme legislature of Norway, founded in 1814, this building is located at 22 Karl Johans gate and started to use for “The Storting” since 1866. This photo is the back of the building.

The Front of The Parliament Building, there is a free guided tour for visitors to join to see the inside of the building, but the English tour is limited, once an hour. Individuals cannot book a tour in advance. When we were there, the English tours for the following 2 hours were full, we did not want to wait a guided tour for so long, so we dropped this visit.

Local people in Oslo we met were very friendly, they not only volunteered to take photos for us but also had a small talk with us to introduce this city,  such as where we should not miss and how cold Oslo in winter is, it sounds winter in Oslo is similar as Toronto, maybe Toronto is a little warmer.

Oslo also has this tour bus “Hop On Hop Off” like most big cities, but it is not included in Oslo Pass.

Our 2nd stop was Akershus Fortress along the harbor, which is at the same direction as Oslo City Hall where we went yesterday.  And we were attracted by the music, which was played by Police Orchestra for Oslo Police Day, which was held in the harbourfront square. It’s a big bonus for us to join this annual event. Although we don’t understand Norwegian, we can feel how close the community is.

Peter Tordenskjold (1690-1720), one of the most famous national naval heroes in Denmark and Norway  丹麦和挪威最知名的海军英雄之一Peter Tordenskjold(1690年-1720年)

The Statue of Former U.S. President Roosevelt, when we saw it, we were wondering why they put a statue of U.S. President in Oslo. I found the answer online, because President Roosevelt helped Crown Princess of Norway Martha and her three children to escape Norway when the Germans invaded Norway, one of three children is the King of Norway Harald V. They stayed at the White House with The Roosevelt Family for a while.

We left harbourfront square and were on our way to our 2nd destination Akershus Fortress. As the handouts for Oslo Police Day were in Norwegian, we had no idea what the next was. We were wondering why so many local people were at the same direction to Akershus Fortress.

WOW, Police Horse Show, definitely worth to wait

Police Horse Stable, open to the public today

We were so surprised and excited to see those handsome Police Horses closely, even you can touch them.

The main entrance to Akershus Fortress is very very small, right next to Police Horse Stable, which we missed, while following that fortress wall to search for an entrance to Akershus Fortress, we saw this gorgeous house, my dream house.

There is a little train you can take to visit around, actually we really need one, we were so exhausted after walking such a long way.

As long as you can see this fortress wall, you are still in the area of Akershus Fortress, keep looking for an entrance, don’t give up.

Electric cars in Norway are very common, not only because they have extremely high gas price, but also because electric car charging stations are everywhere.

Finally we saw the castle.

The castle faces to the harbor.

Did you see that? A red door at the top of the hill, it’s the entrance we were looking for.

Ha!-Ha!-Ha! We finally got in.

Castles always build at the top of a hill, so climb up up up !!!

Here we go, this is Akershus Castle, a medieval castle that was built by King Haakon V in 1299 to protect Oslo and it was renovated by King Christian IV (1588-1648) to be a royal palace and has been used as a prison for decades.

Arkershus Fortress is a great place to know Oslo’s history, entering to the fortress is free, but if you want to visit this castle, the Royal Palace of King Christian IV, you have to pay NOK 100 per person, free entrance for Oslo Pass holders.

The first room we saw should be for servants because of those simple decors.

A Long and Dark Tunnel

We were under the castle, where were we?  No idea, just follow the light.

The route of the tour guides you to visit the creator of this castle first, the Tomb of King Haakon V and his Queen.

Walking to National Theater Station to take a subway to our next destination

Around 10 minutes to Spikersuppa Rink, which is next to National Theater, the rink is for skating during the winter, like Nathan Phillips Square in front of Toronto City Hall. It’s a pond during the summer.

From my pose in the photo, could you guess what we were going to see?  Yes, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944), a Norwegian Painter and Printmaker, his whole life was surrounded by sickness, loss, repression and despair, “I was born dying”, he said. His paintings were exact portrayals of his inner world, which I felt while seeing his artworks one by one through this museum.  “The Scream,” painted in 1893, is one of the most recognized and iconic paintings in history.

They started to build new Munch museum since 2015 next to Oslo Opera House in downtown Oslo, much bigger than current one. And it will open to the public in 2020.

Edvard Munch’s Artworks

Edvard Munch loved painting himself, this one was one of his self-portraits.

There are four versions of “The Scream”, 3 paintings and 1 pastel sketch version. As ” The Scream” in Munch Museum was stolen in 2004 and recovered in 2006 with some damage, taking photos for “The Scream” in Munch Museum is not allowed in order to protect that painting. So you only can see that painting in your eyes, even you can see that damage. Don’t be disappointed, you can take a photo for another version of “The Scream” exhibited in National Gallery, where we would go later. The 4th version was exhibited in MoMA New York before and sold for $119,922,600 at Sotheby’s Auction in 2012, one of the most expensive paintings in the world.

Luckily, you can take photos for the second most popular painting of Edvard Munch, “Madonna”. Edvard Munch painted several versions of ”Madonna” as well between 1892 and 1895, Munch Museum has two versions.

I don’t like Munch’s paintings so much, too dark too sad, but I like the cafe in the lobby, tasteful coffee in a nice and relaxing atmosphere.

Walk back to Toyen Station and take Line 1 to the terminal station Frognerseteren, the longest subway we took in Oslo, about 40 minutes, as the line 1 to the top of the hill is not a hot one, a train comes every 15 minutes during the off-peak time, we missed one when we were back to hotel, a long wait during the storm.

Frognerseteren Restaurant, next to the station, recommended by travelers in Tripadvisor for a stunning view over Oslo              Frognerseteren饭店, 就在地铁站旁, Tripadvisor上有游客推荐到这里来鸟瞰奥斯陆城

Not high enough to see the overview of Oslo City, trees block most of views and the weather turned bad

We found those special houses with grass on the roof although they blocked our view.  Don’t know if the grass is planted on the roof intentionally and how to plant the grass.

Started drizzling, everything around became vague

Frognerseteren is not high enough, let us find the highest peak in Oslo, take a Line 1 back to Holmenkollen Station, 5 stops away, we just missed a train, had to wait for another 15 minute during the storm.

Get off the subway and follow the sign to Holmenkollen Ski Museum, which was our today’s last stop.

The signs made us confused. Although the jump tower was right in front of us, we got a wrong place. Here is an office of a ski association. Luckily, we met a local resident who was walking her dog in the rain, she guided us to climb up to the top of the hill, where the jump tower locates.

On the way to the jump tower, you will pass by this hotel, Scandic Holmenkollen Park Hotel.

We finally got there, although you can see the ski tower right from downtown Oslo, it really takes a long time to get there, 40 minutes subway ride plus 20 minutes climbing up to the top, so exhausted, especially after walking all day.

The Entrance to Ski Museum, which is at the bottom of the jump tower, the ticket is NOK 130, free to Oslo Pass holders

A museum has two parts, one is about how skiing plays a role in Norwegians’ winter life in the history of over 4000 years, another part is a history of winter sports in Norway.

In old times, ski poles were also weapons and tools.

Is that ice castle in “Frozen” inspired by this one?   《

WOW, we wanna one, where can we find it?

Holmenkollen hosted 1980 FIS Ski Jumping World Cup, 1983 FIS Nordic Combined World Cup, 1952 Winter Olympics and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1930, 1966, 1982 and 2011. Here is the exhibition of some medals.

A small elevator brings you to the top of the jump tower, where you have the most stunning view over the Oslo city.

When you get into the elevator, you will find how magic works in this elevator, an amazing tilted elevator built in the jump tower, which brings you to the top, and you can enjoy a view through the window of the elevator.

Please see how the elevator works from the video.

The View from the Observation Deck of the top of Jump Tower, you can feel the view from Eddie The Eagle’s eyes and know how brave he is. Highly recommend the movie “Eddie The Eagle” filmed by Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman from a real story about Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards.

The Podium for Hundreds of Ski Jumping Matches, including 1952 Winter Olympics

The drizzle suddenly upgraded to a downpour, much heavier when we were at the top, very low visibility, bad weather happened to such a good trip, so disappointed, especially when we typically went to the top and hoped to get a stunning view over the Oslo.  But the view was still better than Frognerseteren Restaurant where we got earlier, the higher the climb, the better the view, don’t waste time to go there except for that restaurant.

The elevator was taking us down to the museum.

You will see a bunch of medals and trophy cups in the museum to record the history of this ski jump tower.

Trolls are everywhere in the gift shop, we saw a big one at the entrance to the museum, you can bring one with you.  Trolls are in a lot of tales in Norwegian and Scandinavian traditions. They live together in family units in mountains and caves, similar as “The Smurfs”.

A Sweater with Norwegian Wool Made in Norway, a perfect souvenir from Norway, but too expensive for us, NOK 2199

A Big Guy

The Statue of Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) at the exit, a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Before leaving, let us see the beauty again in the rain, a hill size of 134 meteres. The steepest part of the landings slope is 35.7 degrees, it was first built in 1894 and upgraded in 19 times, the current one was rebuilt in 2008, every reconstruction made it higher and steeper, more challenging to jumpers.

The View from the Halfway, where the museum locates, seating capacity 70,000 is at the bottom

Today was a long day, we went to a lot of places, fully enjoyed the advantage of Oslo Pass although we were totally exhausted and soaked through by heavy storm.

Let me show how much we saved through Oslo Pass. To simplify the comparison, the price for admissions to museums and public transits are based on current price, the following list does not include those free places.

Tourists with Oslo Pass                    Tourists without Oslo Pass

Based on the review and comparison, we actually did not need 48 hrs Oslo Pass to cover the 2 day visit, getting a 24 hrs Oslo Pass (395 NOK) to cover Day 2 should be the most economical way. And Oslo Public Transit has a 24-hr ticket, which costs 90 NOK, if you need take rides over 3 times, you should get one. Personally, I highly recommend Oslo Pass, which can save your money and time.

Here is the map showing our Day 2 visit in Oslo, Norway.

MinMin got a chance to present his paper in a conference, which was held in Bergen, Norway in September, 2014. As the organizer covers the travel expense for attendants  and the conference is very well known in the industry, there is always a fierce competition every year to select 6 or 7 presenters out of hundreds of applications to attend the conference. We were so happy to get invited to the 2014 conference.

Preparation For the Trip

This is our first time to Europe. I would accompany MinMin to visit the two major cities in Norway. At least, we can save MinMin’s expense for the flight to Norway and the hotel during the conference. It’s a super good deal, which we cannot miss. After the excitement, we realized we only had one month to prepare for the trip, including visa applications, flights and hotels. As a Chinese, we have to apply for entry visas to most of the countries, no exception for Norway.

There is no non-stop flight from Toronto to Oslo. We had to go to Newark Airport in New Jersey, USA to connect our flight to Oslo, Norway. That means we should get a U.S. visa first. All the U.S. visa interview appointments in Toronto were fully booked for the following 3 months. With the help of the Call Center of U.S. Consulate General Toronto, we successfully booked an appointment with US Embassy Ottawa one week later.

As we were going to make a one-day trip from Toronto to Ottawa, in and out, no stay in Ottawa to save time and money, we left home at midnight and drove overnight to Ottawa to catch the earliest schedule for visa interviews.

Many thanks for Tim Hortons coffee to energize us all the way to Ottawa during the 5 hour overnight driving.

From Darkness to Twilight

It’s easy to find parking near U.S. Embassy in Byward Market in the early morning. We parked our car in Byward Parking Garage, the nearest parking lot to U.S. Embassy. Its address is 70 Clarence St, Ottawa, ON.  The morning special price is only $2 before 11 am.   Walk out of the parking garage, U.S. Embassy is right in front of you.

The interview went well and got out before noon. We were driving along that famous Rideau Canal and found a way home. There’s no extra time for us to do a short visit, we came back to visit Ottawa a year later.

Fortunately, we got a sunny day to make the 10-hour driving much more comfortable.

One week later, our passports with U.S. entry visas were ready to pick up at DHL branch, which you selected at U.S. Embassy.

The next task was to get the Norway Schengen Visa. We had already submitted our visa applications to the online visa application system, but we had to go to the Visa Office for bio data as this was our first time to apply for Schengen Visa. On the day after picking up our passports, we went to Consulate General of Norway in downtown Toronto near Bloor/Yonge Subway Station to submit our bio data. The address is 2 Bloor Street West, Suite 2109, Toronto, ON. Consulates for Norway, Denmark and Sweden are in the same office for Schengen Visa to Northern Europe.

You just go to Consulate to submit the required bio data. At that point, you don’t know whether you will get approval for your visa. Actually, for our case, although MinMin was invited to attend the conference, I just came with him for our family trip to Norway before and after the conference. The Norway Consulate emailed us to add my name into the invitation letter from the conference host. Thanks to the conference host to get it done in one day.

For the details of required documents for Schengen Visa applications, please go to the official website of Schengen Visa for Norway to see the list. I want to spend some time to talk about the required travel medical insurance for Schengen Visa here.

As Canadian Permanent Residents and Canadian Citizens living in Ontario have OHIP, which can cover some travel medical insurance, travel medical insurance provided by most insurance companies is a supplemental coverage to OHIP to meet the requirement of Schengen Visa. At that time, we were foreign students holding student permits who did not have OHIP, we had to buy a travel medical insurance to fully meet the requirement of Schengen Visa, not an additional one to OHIP. It’s very easy to buy one in China, because all Chinese need this coverage if they want to go to Europe, but in Canada, Canadian Citizens even don’t need a visa to enter Europe for a short visit, buying a travel insurance is just an option, not a mandatory for them. And they can even buy a travel insurance directly from a supermarket.

We checked all insurance companies we knew but got same response “They don’t sell a travel medical insurance to foreigners who don’t have OHIP”. At that point, we almost gave up and had last hope to check with a Chinese travel agency “Tianbao Travel” who are experienced to deal with Schengen Visas to Europe for Chinese people in Canada. We found a right person to help us.  But as we were foreigners without OHIP, we had to go to their branch to buy the travel medical insurance in person at an affordable price. Our travel medical insurance was finally done after searching for weeks. I am here to write down our experience to buy the travel medical insurance for those people who may have same situation as us. Actually there is limited information online about buying a travel medical insurance for people like us in Canada to apply for Schengen Visa. Hope it can help.

And with the great help of the Norway Consulate Toronto, they gave us a priority to catch up the conference and sent our passports with Schengen Visas back to us before we departed. Otherwise, we may have to pick up our visas at the Oslo airport. Our Schengen Visas for Norway was only valid for 8 days with single entry, which exactly matched our itinerary, no extra days as a buffer. It’s much different from U.S. visitor visa, which gave us multiple entries within 1 years at that time.  Since November, 2014, U.S. provides multiple entries for 10 years visitor visa for Chinese citizens.

After getting the visas done, we went to the bank to get some cash in Norwegian Krone and we have a credit card for international use without foreign transaction fee.  FYI, as the bank usually does not keep cash in Norwegian Krone, you have to inform them the amount you need one week in advance.

According to travel blog posts I saw, the prices of restaurants and food are pretty high in Norway. And we would arrive at Oslo, Norway on weekends, we were not sure if stores were closed during the weekends. So we decided to bring all the stocks of instant noodles and snacks with us, just for in case. Actually, we made a right decision for that.

Day 1      8/28/2014           Thursday

After one-month preparation, our first trip to Norway and Europe finally began.  Our flight to Newark, NJ, USA departed around 3pm.  We always leave home early to give ourselves enough time to do customs clearance and security check. So, we can sit down and enjoy our lunch at the airport. BTW, travelers to USA clear U.S. customs and immigration processes at Toronto Pearson Airport to get advance approval before boarding a flight to USA.

Waiting for boarding

Our Flight: Small but Full

Departed On Time, Breathtaking Overlook View of Toronto

New Jersey

Our flight landed in the domestic area at Newark Airport, but we had to transfer to the international area for the flight to Oslo, Norway. There was no clear signal to guide us. After asking two employees for help to find a way for us, we finally found a right gate  to take a shuttle bus to the international area.

This is the international terminals at Newark Airport, first time we have been there, took some time to walk around.

Duty Free Shop  免税店

A Big Food Court

A 8-hour long haul flight was waiting for us, and we were not confident in United Airlines’ meals. So, to store some energy was better for us.

Here we are, the terminal for our flight to Oslo, Norway, it’s on time.

Our flight would cross North Atlantic Ocean to Oslo. The local time of Oslo is 6 hours ahead of us, now it’s at midnight in Oslo, Norway.

Our flight departed. What a fantastic overlook view of New York City at night!

Dinner, the first meal during the flight, it’s good.

Day 2     8/29/2014           Friday

Morning ! We always have a good sleep on a flight.

Breakfast, the second meal on the flight

In Norway Already

The Overlook View of Oslo, Norway

Oslo Airport is in the suburban Oslo, 40 min drive from downtown Oslo.

Norwegian Air was next to ours, the third largest low-cost airline in Europe

We got at Oslo Airport on time, local time at 10am, 8/29/2014, Friday. It’s very smooth to clear Norwegian Customs, they did not even see the required travel medical insurance.

After searching online, taxi from Oslo Airport to downtown Oslo is over NOK 700 (over CAD 100) for 40 min ride, very very expensive. Don’t worry, there is a shuttle train “FLYTOGET” between Oslo Airport and Oslo Central Station, which is located in the downtown Oslo every 10 or 20 minutes. There are ticket vending machines at the airport near the tourist information center, which can accept credit card and cash. The ticket price is NOK 190 per person for a single ride.  Oslo S is Oslo Central Station, where we would go.

We were on the way to visit Oslo, Norway.

Everything is in Norwegian, but most people we met in Oslo can speak fluent English, no worries to travel around.

Our train was coming.

The silver train is an express train, which we took from airport to central station.

That red train is a local train run by NSB, Norwegian State Railways, also can take you from airport to central station, slower but cheaper. The ticket is NOK 93 per person per ride. But there is no ticket booth for NSB in the airport, you have to purchase online in advance,  but you cannot use North American credit cards through their website, you have to call them to finish a purchase. So, we had to take the express train at the airport to central station. And then we bought the return ticket in the NSB ticket booth at the central station to save money.

Good Day Today

Downtown Oslo, we finally got there.

Oslo Central Station

As the earliest check-in time of our hotel was 3 pm, we were going to visit the city first and come back to check in later. We did not want to carry heavy luggage with us all the way, so we stored our luggage in the central station. Follow the sign for Luggage Lockers and go downstairs for the 24 hrs self service for your luggage.  The price is about NOK 40 for a small locker and NOK 80 for a bigger one for 24 hours if I don’t remember it wrong. The bigger one can fit our 30 inch luggage. Choose the language to English and follow the instruction.

Before starting our visit, we need buy some water. There are several convenient stores in the central station.

We were astonished by the price of a bottle of water in Oslo. This was the cheapest one in the store, NOK 42.50 for a bottle of 1.5L water, around CAD$7.

Now it’s lunch time, need find some food to eat, feeling astonished again by the price of a meal.

The set of Whopper Cheeseburger in Burger King cost us NOK 99 in Oslo in 2014.

Another thing I cannot accept is that you have to pay for a washroom in Europe . In North America and in China, public washrooms are free service to the public. There is never a problem to find a free washroom. But here, in Oslo, Norway, I had to pay NOK 10 for the washroom in the central station. Actually, it’s very difficult to find a washroom on the street, even I was ready to pay for it. You have to be a customer who really buys something in a store to use its washroom. So please make sure you go to a washroom before going out of an attraction.

Before visiting Oslo, we had to do one more thing. We went to Oslo Visitor Center right in front of Oslo Central Station to buy Oslo Pass, which gives you free entry to over 30 museums and attractions and free rides on all public transits. The price of Oslo Pass in 2014 was NOK 290 for 24 hrs, NOK 425 for 48hrs and NOK 535 for 72hrs.  The price has been risen, please check the official website for current price and the list of participating museums and attractions. Base on our itinerary, we would spend 3 days in Oslo, Norway, 8/29/2014, 8/30/2014 and 9/4/2014, but we only had 2 consecutive days, so we had to buy two Oslo Passes for 48 hrs and two for 24 hrs separately, although Oslo Pass for 72 hrs is the most cost-effective.

Our journey to Oslo started from the subway, we can walk into the subway station directly while holding an Oslo Pass, don’t need to go to that entrance to scan the ticket.

There are totally 6 lines, most attractions can be reached by subway. You have to do a perfect itinerary to write down which line you should take to a specific attraction and which stop you should get off. Oslo Central Station is a transfer station to all 6 lines.

Our first stop was the Royal Palace, take a subway for 2 stops to Nationaltheatret Station, which is the closest station to the Royal Palace. And take a 10-minute walk to there.  Get out of the station and you will see National Theater right in front of you.

National Theater, one of the biggest theaters in Norway, was built in

Walk along Karl Johans gate to the Royal Palace from National Theater, you will see University of Oslo on your right.

Here we go, we were in the Palace Square, that yellow building is the Royal Palace.

Staff in the Royal Palace wear traditional customs

The Royal Palace is open to the public during the summer from end June to mid August. They offer an one-hour guided tour for visitors. We were there at a wrong time to miss a good opportunity to see the life of a royal family.

We walked around to kill some time before seeing the Changing of the Guard.

The End of The Ceremony

Please see the details of Changing of the Guard in the video I recorded.

Look, hundreds of people including us were here for the ceremony of Changing of the Guard. That’s why the Royal Palace is the most popular attraction in Oslo, Norway.

Went to the 2nd attraction Oslo City Hall by walk from the Royal Palace

Haakon VII, Prince Carl of Denmark, became the first King of Norway (1905-1957) after 1905 dissolution of the union with Sweden.

This exit of Nationaltheatret Station on Stortingsgata is much closer to the Royal Palace than that one we got out of the station, but that exit on Karl Johans gate has a lot of view to see.

Houses and buildings are built in the mountains in Oslo.

The most special is here, the architect designed a plaza to invite people to walk on the roof to the top of opera house.

You even can bike to the top.

We were at the top of the opera house to enjoy a beautiful view over the city.  That is a business district near the station.
